Starting Point for Travel

81
Question 66. What is the criterion of measuring the distance between the starting point and the destination? Should we begin to measure right from our house door, our locality or from the outskirts of the city?
It is the distance between the last
point of the city or village that is
being left and the first point of the
destination which is accepted and
there is no difference between small
cities and big ones. Therefore, if that
city or village is wall-bordered, it is from there that we begin to measure the eight farsakh; if not, it is from the last residential buildings and houses.(1)
Big Cities
Questions 67. Is there any differences between small cities and big cities in measuring the prescribed distance? In big cities, do we have to measure the distance right from our house?
As long as a big city is considered as one single city, it is not different from a small city regardless of how big that city is.
1. According to this answer, it is the distance between the last interconnected residential buildings of the city or village that is being left and the first interconnected residential buildings of the destination which will be accepted as the distance of travel.
Those Who Travel Frequently
Those who travel frequently are of three kinds:
1. Those who travel as their occupations
A person whose occupation is travel such as a driver, pilot or seafarer has to perform Prayers normally according to what will be mentioned later (even if the travel is for transporting their household goods and furniture). Indeed, it has to be in such a manner that the occupation is commonly considered to be travel, for example someone is said to be a driver (driving is their job).
2. Those who travel for their occupations
A person whose occupation is not travel but their occupation requires them to travel such as someone whose residence is in one place but their occupation (such as trade, teaching, etc.) is in another place in such a manner that they are required to travel on most days or, for instance, every other day, they shall perform Prayers normally according to what will be mentioned later.
Here is the details about Prayers for those two:
Those who travel as their occupations or their occupations require them to travel(1) are divided into four groups:
First group: Those who wish to do it for less than a month. In this case, they have to perform Prayers in a shortened manner.
Second group: Those who wish to do it for one month up to less than three months. This group are divided into two subgroups:
1. Those who travel once a week and their Prayers will be shortened.
2. Those who travel twice or more in a week and they should perform
Prayers in both shortened and normal (four rak’ah) manners based
1. Regarding these two kinds, two issues must be clarified so that the judgment can be known: a. the number of travel per month
b. the length of time that they are going to continue this way
 an obligatory precaution.
Third group: Those who wish to do it for three months or more. This group are divided into three subgroups:
1. Those who travel once a week and their Prayers will be shortened.
2. Those who travel twice or thrice a week and they should perform Prayers in both shortened and normal (four rak’ah) manners based on an obligatory precaution.
3. Those who travel for half of a week or four times or more in a week and their Prayers will be normal (four rak’ah).(1)
Fourth group: Those who are not sure whether they travel less than a month or more than it and they have to perform Prayers in a shortened way.
The aforementioned details are shown in the following diagram briefly:
Less than one month
More than a month but less than three month
One day a week
Shortened Shortened
    Occupational Frequent Travels
Two or more   Precaution:
  Three months or more
days a week
One day a week
Two or three days a week
Half of a week or four days a week
both manners Shortened
Precaution: both manners
Normal Shortened
Not sure whether less or more than one month
  1. Therefore, those who are sure that they travel once up to four times per month, their Prayers will be shortened. Those who travel five up to fourteen days per month, they should perform Prayers in both shortened and normal ways based on an obligatory precaution. Also, those who travel fifteen days or more in a month, they have to perform Prayers normally (four rak’ah).

Salam @Hassan Khalil
